Working it Out

WIO is a unique organisation in Australia providing a specialist service to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex people and their families across Tasmania. We are proud of our reputation as an inclusive, community driven organisation respected by our members and other key stakeholders. WIO has the capacity, resources and desire to achieve our strategic goals. WIO has played a key role in identifying the nexus between suicide prevention and the importance of embracing diversity. WIO provides services designed to meet the needs of people negotiating their gender, sexuality and or intersex status through:

  • Individual counselling and/or support;
  • Support groups;
  • Student education and support in schools;
  • Training in workplaces;
  • Policy development with government agencies;
  • Partnership projects with mainstream services; and
  • Partnership projects with LGBTI organisations.

Gender Help for Parents – This website has been created by Australian parents who have struggled to find information about services and support for issues around their children’s gender identity.

Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays (PFLAG) – A non-profit voluntary organisation whose members have a common goal of keeping families together

Headspace

headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds. The service is designed to make it easy as possible for a young person and their family to get the help they need for problems affecting their wellbeing.

The services can be accessed through headspace centres or through their online counselling service eheadspace.

QLife – QLife is Australia’s first nationally-oriented counselling and referral service for people of diverse sex, genders and sexualities. QLife provides nation-wide, early intervention, peer supported telephone and web based services to support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people of all ages. Check out the website for further information on phone-based, online chat or email contact options. QLife counselling services include phone counselling (1800 184 527) and web chat services which are available 3pm – midnight, 7 days a week.

The Gender Centre – The Gender Centre is based in Sydney, New South Wales. It provides a range of services to the Transgender community as well as up to date information for professionals.
