The AEU successfully secured the payment of lost income for a member who did not have current teacher registration at the time he completed a 5 week contract at a school.

All teachers have the responsibility to maintain current registration with the Teachers Registration Board and will not be paid a salary until a current registration certificate is issued, except where it can be shown that there were circumstances beyond the employee’s control.

The AEU put a strong case to Mr Tim Bullard, Secretary of the Department of Education, that there were circumstances that existed beyond the member’s control which justified the payment of his salary for that 5 week period.

Mr Bullard agreed, and the member was back paid.
